Sun Stain - Tampa,Florida

Today is a good day. It is another day that I get the opportunity to talk about music! My favorite thing to talk about. My next victim is a long time friend of mine, a brother in music. Rich Smyth! I've spent a decent amount of time on the road with Rich, recently even.

This dude kills it at any instrument he picks up. You can catch him on guitar shredding with Abortion Twins (Although I have witnessed him drumming for them as well!) or see him behind the drums with his band Over Wait Mammal! They are a sweet Reel Big Fish tribute.

When meeting up on our last tour together. Rich handed me something golden. He gave me a cassette tape of his solo project called Sun Stain. I got home, ordered a better tape player and popped that bad boy right in. I was not disappointed. In fact, It blew my mind. Its a mix of punk and ambient black metal. melodic to the core.

Here is my review of the first track on the Album "After The Rain" by Tampa Florida's SUN STAIN

"Springtime In November" is 12 minutes long. I listened to the entire thing. it starts off like punk rock.. but with horror punk meets goth rock vocals. super catchy almost pop punk guitar leads. At about 4 minutes in there is a sweet instrumental break. It builds great anticipation for what is to come. The vocals pop back in with the lyrics "Bracing for a storm that never comes" the vocals pick up from there. the guitars get chunky and rich throws down some catchy leads that are actually quite calming. At about 8 minutes in the song takes another sweet instrumental break and slowly creeps into getting heavy! double bass kicks in, after a false ending, it kicks into something more Black Metal /Crust with melodic pop punk leads going on. This is an amazing song. All the way through. This one is a roller coaster, its moving along slowly, but its worth the ride. I am so impressed by how many genres this song is. haha.
